Overview

A menacing looking storm approaches. The different cloud shapes and texture highlight the amazing air currents that take place within a large summer storm. As a pilot I’ve experienced first hand how these fierce airflows can throw a large airliner about.  Although on this occassion it was my lens that I pointed directly into the battle from the safety of my home’s deck, rather than a flight deck!

Exposed well to the right, NX2 RAW conversion and exposure adjustment, dramatic contrast curve added. 16bit aRGB Tiff into CS4, converted to BW and Toned (nik Software) minor burning. Grain.

I feel that I’m somewhat behind with news here at my The Complete Picture site but that’s because I’ve been really busy with taking my project PolePics live. 

If you’ve ever wondered how birds see the world then this project is from you! Lots of information is arriving over on the dedicated polepics website. My photographs of all the action at the Richard Scruby Memorial Tournament are now on line and avaliable to purchase.

5×7′s are $10 each, that includes the tax, and will generate approx $5 of proceeds per image for the trust fund. A number are also off to a local newspaper.

The images are arranged as best as possible in team groups, although by nature of the sport many shots have players from both teams. I do have many more images so if you do not see yourself then ket me know and I can check my files.

The easiest way for me to manage any purchases is for each team to supply a list of requirements – each picture has a number below it – by the end of April and I can make the prints and hae them sent to you shortly afterwards.

Alternative sizes are possible, please contact me direct for details. Lets see if we can make a few more $ for the trust fund.

During my Equinox show at Gallery ArtsPlus Belleville  I’ll be providing information regarding the images ever few days. Today I take you high into the sky with a print titled Miles High.

'Miles High'

I titled it Miles High because the aeroplane that is producing the contrail is about 7miles up in the sky between Toronto and Montreal. It is probably on route from somewhere in the US to Europe and the crew would be settling down for a short night as they race towards the sunrise that they will meet over the Eastern Atlantic in a few hours time.   I personally love the colours and the way the light from the setting sun plays with the clouds creating an amazing perspective, suggesting a very high vantage point.

Last night was the opening night of the Equinox Exhibition at Gallery ArtPlus, Belleville where I am the Feature Photographer. I have to say it was very special to see a whole collection of my work hanging together, all framed and matted in the same style. Although after all the work, late nights – complete nights and endless printing, I have to say that a sense of relief was the biggest emotion!

The pieces are very diverse from a photograph of the UK aerobatic team the Red Arrows performing during a very misty day in 2007 to sunlight bursting through the trees just along the street from where I live. Ultimately the majority of the images are about how the light plays with the subject, illuminating, shaping, revealing or concealing and I was pleased several attendees at the reception picked up this point.

Over the next few weeks I will be posting all the images and providing some commentary on the pieces. I’ve also worked out how to provide upto date providence information about each piece of work online and there are links to these too.   

Several friends and neighbours had no idea that I took such photographs and it was good to see them excited. The show also features a number of other very well established and talented local artists and further details can be found on the galleries website.

It seems that it is only a few days ago that the phone rang and I was asked whether I’d be able to supply enough photographic images to fill a gallery at an upcoming exhibition. Equinox, Gallery Arts Plus, Belleville 26MArch – 26April 2009. Despite the short notice and the arrival of the polepics mast I decided to go for it. The chance of my first significant exhibition in this area is too good an opportunity to pass by. 

The theme for the show is Folk, Colour and Fantasy and due to the short notice I’d be using images from my library of images rather than shooting specifically for the exhibition. It took several hours to search through my archives and I really must get round to sorting out all the files in Light-room soon!

I decided that all prints would be made specifically for the exhibition. Some images would only need a little processing, but others would need to be worked from scratch. I even made one new picture with the mast system!! All went very well until it came to making the prints when some serious banding problems occurred. Eventually I managed to resolve them, but the stock of archival inks was heavily depleted during the rectification requiring an overnight delivery to be ordered at extra expense. 

I also upgraded to Photoshop CS4 during the period and ran into Scratch disk problems that took an evening of internet searching to resolve. Thankfully with a day to go to the hanging deadline I’d made most of the prints. Now making the frames is also part of my mission and so I’d placed an order with National Art in Nova Scotia to supply the mouldings and other bits and pieces like Matt Board. They’d arrived in good time and so I looked forward to some chopping and fixing. 

It was during this that I discovered that the specific chuck key for the thumbnail joiner was missing. I searched high and low, knowing that we packed it for our move about a year ago. Eventually it turned up but half a day was gone. So the matt cutting went on late into the night, in-fact right through to next morning!!!!

So I’m relieved that most of the work is done. Just some glazing to be cut and we are done.

Last weekend we opened the doors to our pole*pics website and we’ve had a lot of hits! While we let Luksa finish off manufacturing North America’s most advanced pole camera system, we’ve been busy at the pole*pics studios. In order to perfect our computer controlled camera capture and work flow, we’ve created the pole*pics simulator – I told you this project is fun!

With the name Polepics decided apon, the AdMan has moved his attention to producing some logo and art work for the branding. I received an email today showing only one choice. The AdMan told me that it “Feels like one of those “natural” solutions that just couldn’t be anything else.”

I took one look and completely agree. I have great pleasure in sharing it below.

Today is very exciting in the development of my major business venture. The name you chose  is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. And naming my pole photography business has been consuming much of my time – to date it has been living under the project title of ‘Aerial Advantage’ 

Today with the help of the Adman, my marketing provider, we discussed various naming ideas.  It must be Short, Punchy and memorable. It is really useful if no-one else is using the name already too. It must communicate the business, have logo potential and for the website  .com should be available too. Finally it must comprise of no more than 2 syllables, i.e. two short words. At first I thought “not-poss” but the Adman was ahead of me and thankfully provided a matrix of possible combinations. 

I looked at this and thought of a few more before reading his favourite - pole*pics  - my goodness me, the AdMan is a true genius.

My analysis of other  pole photography companies identifies that for the business to develop a proper well though out ‘branding’ is advantageous. But who do you trust with the responsibility of developing a brand for your own business, a brand that you’ll have to live with for a very long time!

For me the answer was fortunately very easy. The AdMan!

 You can read all about John Malmstrom’s creative career by following the link above, but in summary he is an exceptionally talented artist. For much of his career he has used his amazing artistic vision in advertising, becoming the marketing director for one of the worlds biggest banks. He now lives in Bear River, Nova Scotia. Our paths first crossed when we lived on the other side of the river, in the sleepy tidal village, and soon became good friends. 

Fortunately I do not need his former $750,000,000 budget to gain the benefit of his world class skills and I am very excited to see where this leads. Of course I’ll be updating thing here with the progress.
