    Overview

A menacing looking storm approaches. The different cloud shapes and texture highlight the amazing air currents that take place within a large summer storm. As a pilot I’ve experienced first hand how these fierce airflows can throw a large airliner about.  Although on this occassion it was my lens that I pointed directly into the battle from the safety of my home’s deck, rather than a flight deck!

    1st Feature Photographer Exhibition

    leave a comment »

    Hello Everyone.

It seems that it is only a few days ago that the phone rang and I was asked whether I’d be able to supply enough photographic images to fill a gallery at an upcoming exhibition. Equinox, Gallery Arts Plus, Belleville 26MArch – 26April 2009. Despite the short notice and the arrival of the polepics mast I decided to go for it. The chance of my first significant exhibition in this area is too good an opportunity to pass by.

    equinoxadvert

The theme for the show is Folk, Colour and Fantasy and due to the short notice I’d be using images from my library of images rather than shooting specifically for the exhibition. It took several hours to search through my archives and I really must get round to sorting out all the files in Light-room soon!

I decided that all prints would be made specifically for the exhibition. Some images would only need a little processing, but others would need to be worked from scratch. I even made one new picture with the mast system!! All went very well until it came to making the prints when some serious banding problems occurred. Eventually I managed to resolve them, but the stock of archival inks was heavily depleted during the rectification requiring an overnight delivery to be ordered at extra expense.

I also upgraded to Photoshop CS4 during the period and ran into Scratch disk problems that took an evening of internet searching to resolve. Thankfully with a day to go to the hanging deadline I’d made most of the prints. Now making the frames is also part of my mission and so I’d placed an order with National Art in Nova Scotia to supply the mouldings and other bits and pieces like Matt Board. They’d arrived in good time and so I looked forward to some chopping and fixing.

It was during this that I discovered that the specific chuck key for the thumbnail joiner was missing. I searched high and low, knowing that we packed it for our move about a year ago. Eventually it turned up but half a day was gone. So the matt cutting went on late into the night, in-fact right through to next morning!!!!

So I’m relieved that most of the work is done. Just some glazing to be cut and we are done.

    New Years Baby!!

    with 3 comments

    Hi everyone

Caroline, Baby Aaron with Dr Rice and Nurse Melissa

No I’m not announcing an official new service although I welcome all enquiries – but I wanted to share the happy news of the arrival of my 3rd son, Aaron Oliver Draper who was born in our local Picton hospital at 12.54am on Monday 12th January. All went very well and I am very happy and proud.

Aaron opens his eyes to the World

Aaron opens his eyes to the World, Mum and the words NIKON!!

I know many people like to know that he weighed in at 7lb 1oz and the labor was really quick – the official time 2 hours 20. No pain relief used (for the 3rd time) and everyone was back at our home 18 hours later.

As an added bonus we found out that Aaron is the first baby to be born at the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital this year and we were presented with a silver cup. The story made the local newspaper – Click Here – to read it.

I’m off to help out some more.

    Take Care, Steven

…is the title of a recently published article in a specialist Ontario newspaper called ‘School Advocate’. As it’s name suggests it centred around education and is published quarterly.

My assignment was to cover the RCMP Musical ride from an educational aspect and required both photography and also text. The event is very dynamic and I decided to use two cameras, one with the Nikons classic reporting lens, the 28-70 f2.8 G and the other with the 70-200 f2.8 G VR. Two images were eventually used, one two support article and another was used as a thumbnail on the front page.

    ‘Story, Story, Story!’

Journalistic imaging is different from fine art in the pace at which things are required. However ‘Story, story, story’ is critical in grabbing attention, along with image quality that comes from good technique and equipment. The first image, from which a thumbnail was used, shows why it is worth hanging about after the main event for a few moments!

    An Award for Natural Support

    with 3 comments

    Hello

I’ve recived two exciting emails over the past couple of days. Firstly both of my pieces were selected for the Art in the County Show, which is something I’m pretty proud of.

This excitement developed further yesterday when I was told that I had won an award for Natural Support. Wow wee! I’m not sure what award I have won – I’ll have to see if the web site gets updated to provide more information, but needless to say I am very pleased to have a piece recognized at the show.

The example entered is matted and framed by myself, the image area being approx. 151/2″ x 101/2. This is an example of what is under the matt of one of my signature edition prints.

    Critical Event

    with 3 comments

The past week has been very busy, and the outcome wasn’t just improvements to the organization of my hard drives, or the disorganization of my blog by playing with different themes and losing all my widget info!

Critical Event is the name given to my event photography work, and it will now reside with its own galleries and info blog – “criticalevent”. This will just make it easier to navigate around each zone, I mean if you are looking at event photo’s do you care about arty fine art prints that cost several times as much?

    “Thanks Dad”

One thing I don’t subscribe to is that a “lower” standard of work should be acceptable just because you are not always in control of every aspect of a shot, and any workflows needs to be carried out promptly. Yes some moments do have to be grabbed very quickly and people don’t want to be standing around while you make several camera adjustments, or attempt some more creative angles. So a use a puff of fill flash, set f8 and keep an eye on your shutter speed and ISO – Oh, watch for those highlight blow-outs that wreck images! I still shoot Raw, you just never know when you might need all the data!

I think, if you are photographing other people at an event, then as a photographer you have a responsibility to ensure that the images you present respect the moments that you capture. So I still have a quality over quantity approach, even if that does mean dumping the million dollar winning smile because you’ve managed to capture, in the soft focus of the background, a view down some mum’s top as she bends down to adjust her point and shoot.

Outside Event work isn’t all about smile, grins or gritty expressions either, my over-riding photographic philosophy applies – stand still, look around and with the benefit of a quality telephoto you can reach into magical moments, and capture them forever.

So have a look at these shots, take a peak at my latest gallery let me know what you think.

    Take Care

    Steven
